A fully reconfigurable series-parallel photovoltaic module is proposed. The DC yield of the proposed module is compared to fixed shade-tolerant topologies. Under partial shading, reconfigurable PV modules can boost energy yield over 12%. Full-scale prototypes of the module and the switching matrix were built.
In particular, a highly accurate simulation framework is used to determine the annual DC yield of three PV module topologies: (1) a PV module with 6 bypass diodes, (2) a fixed series-parallel PV module with six strings of cells connected in parallel, and (3) a fully reconfigurable series-parallel PV module with six blocks of series-connected cells.
For large grid-connected PV power stations, the application architecture involves generating power in blocks and connecting it to the grid in a centralized manner . This entails segmenting the PV sub-array at specific power levels, with PV cell arrays within the sub-array connected through a centralized or serial structure.
